Garage Door Sensors

The garage door safety sensor plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of your heavy garage door. When functioning properly, it causes the door to reverse if an obstruction is detected in its path. However, if the sensor becomes misaligned, it can lead to malfunctions such as the door reversing unexpectedly or failing to operate altogether.

Common issues that can affect the performance of the sensor include dirt accumulation on the lens or misalignment of the sensor emitter and receiver. The sensor comprises two components: one that emits a signal and another that receives it on the opposite side of the garage door opening. Together, they create an invisible beam. If this beam is interrupted by any object in the door’s path, it triggers the garage door opener to reverse, ensuring safety.

Regular maintenance and periodic checks of the garage door sensor are essential to prevent malfunctions and ensure the continued safe operation of your garage door. If you encounter issues with your sensor, it’s advisable to address them promptly to avoid any potential safety hazards.

If you suspect that a misaligned sensor is causing a garage door issue, the first step is to check for any obstructions that may be blocking the light beam between the two sensor units. Items such as a toolbox or a child’s toy could inadvertently interfere with the beam. Remove any potential obstructions in the pathway of the sensor beams.

If after removing obstructions the problem persists, and there is no visible damage to the sensors or their wiring, then you can proceed with further troubleshooting steps.

Here are the steps for troubleshooting a misaligned garage door sensor:

  1. Locate the Sensors: Identify the garage door’s photo-eye sensors. Typically, one sensor is positioned on the left-hand side, and the other on the right, both mounted inside the garage door opening, approximately six inches above the ground. The appearance and design may vary depending on the brand and manufacturer.

  2. Check LED Status: Inspect the LED lights on the side of each sensor. A steady green light indicates proper functioning. If you observe a flashing red light or no light at all, it suggests a potential misalignment issue. If the sensors are lit correctly but the door still doesn’t function, inspect the lens for dirt, dust, or debris, and clean them using a soft cloth.

  3. Assess Alignment: Measure the height of each sensor unit and utilize a level to determine if they are properly aligned. Both sensors should be at equal heights and facing each other directly. If there is misalignment, it could be due to incorrect installation or damaged mountings. In such cases, it’s advisable to seek assistance from a professional garage door repair service to identify and rectify the issue.
